History of Gabaldon Mortuary
In the 1940s, Bert Gabaldon, a young man from Belen, New Mexico, dreamed of becoming a funeral director and owning his own funeral home. But as life goes, World War II intervened, and he was drafted into the U.S. Army.
During one of his leaves, Bert met the love of his life, Mary Lou Chavez, a girl from Los Lunas who had been born in Tome, NM, and raised in Los Lunas, Los Padillas, and Barelas. After a year of correspondence, Bert and Mary Lou were married.
When the war ended, Bert and Mary Lou moved to San Francisco, CA, where he attended mortuary school and graduated magna cum laude in 1948.
Upon returning to Albuquerque, Bert was hired by the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier. His route included Crollette Funeral Home where he became friends with the Crollette family. After a year of civil service, Bert was hired by the Crollette family as a full-time employee. After two years there, Bert made an offer to the family to purchase their funeral home, and they accepted his offer. Bert and Mary Lou became proud owners of Gabaldon Mortuary in 1952.
Ten years later, in 1962, they purchased what is now Gabaldon Mortuary at 1000 Old Coors Dr. NW in Albuquerque. For more than 60 years, the Gabaldon Family has served the families of Albuquerque, the surrounding area, and countries such as Mexico and others abroad.
Gabaldon Mortuary remains family owned and operated, and the family has many ties to the community including the North Valley, South Valley, West Mesa, Bernalillo, Barelas, Los Lunas, Belen, Tome, and Pena Blanca where many family members reside.
