Amelia Torrez, age 92, went home to her heavenly father on Tuesday, September 29, 2015 in Albuquerque, NM. She was born on March 31, 1923 in Belen, New Mexico to Clara and Ned Yamate.  Her mother died during childbirth with Amelia and father later died in an accident leaving Amelia an orphan.  She was then adopted by her grandmother, Bersabe Chavez and her aunt, Eliza. In 1943 she married the love of her life Eloy Torrez and started their life together in Peralta, New Mexico.  This union of love was complete with their family of six children, Priscilla Smith and husband, Larry, David Torrez and wife, Kathy, Michael Torrez and wife, Rosanna, Mary Louise Bermudez and husband, Jim, Kathleen Bloom and husband, Steve; fifteen grandchildren; and seventeen great-grandchildren. Mrs. Torrez was preceded in death by her husband, Eloy M. Torrez; mother, Eliza Garcia; and daughter, Yolanda Lunsford. Amelia attended Harwood School for girls and graduated as Valedictorian of her class and also attended Browning Business College and the University of New Mexico. Amelia was a housewife and mother and volunteered for many years with New Mexico Association for Retarded Citizens. She was considered the Centurion of Southside Church of God (later became New Beginnings Church of God).  She was a vibrant woman, full of life and love. She had tremendous faith in God and showed her love and devotion for him to every person she met.  Her laugh was contagious, making those around her laugh as well and made every person feel special and important.  No matter what took place, she made sure to remind everyone that God would carry them through it and to remain faithful to his promise.  Her favorite things to do were singing, playing the piano, baking biscochitos and pies with fruit from her orchard and making tamales with her family. No one could hold a candle to her red and green chile.  Family was the most important thing to her and enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren.  Services will be at New Beginnings Church of God, 3601 Montgomery Blvd., NE at Carlisle, Monday, October 5, 2015 at 11:00am. A Committal Service is scheduled for the Santa Fe National Cemetery, Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. Family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to New Beginnings Church of God, Children’s Ministries.
