Christobal Eloy Chavez ("Chris"), age 75, born in Vaughn, New Mexico and resident of Albuquerque, New Mexico, was ushered into heaven peacefully in the comfort of his home on Saturday, August 12, 2023.
He will be remembered for his cleverness and knowledge obtained through his life experiences and vast pursuits: star highschool basketball player, proudly served his country in the United States Airforce and honorably discharged in 1971. He was an accomplished Master Electrician and a deeply involved union member for the IBEW local 611 (earning his 50 year pin) and served as the Executive Director of the New Mexico Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO. He was also very active in the Democratic Party at the local, state and national level. His hobbies included playing the guitar, wood working, drawing and astronomy.
Chris was driven; he wanted to understand the intricacies of each part, machine, movement, and to master the requisite tool(s) for each task. In his eyes it was not broken, it just needed a little TLC. His daughter's nicknamed him "MacGyver". He was an intriguing and quick- witted story teller and when the opportunity presented itself, he would share wholeheartedly with his family and friends.
Chris is survived by his children, Priscilla (Jeff) Speidel; Angela Chavez; Christina Chavez; granddaughter, Ava Speidel from Albuquerque, NM; step-son, Neil (Ginger) Katz and step- granddaughter, Alyssa Katz from Atlanta, Georgia; his sisters, Mercedes Chavez; Mary Trinnie Cox; his brothers, Luis (Mary) Chavez, Robert (Viola) Chavez; mother of his children, Carol (Gary) Parker and countless nieces and nephews, family and friends who loved him deeply.
He was preceded in death by his wife Kathryn Chavez and mother, Maria Piedad Chavez. When his time came, he carried himself with dignity, strength, and full of love for those who went before him. He will be missed dearly.
A private interment along side his wife Kathryn (preceded before him) will take place at the Santa Fe National Cemetery, 501 N Guadalupe St. in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Family and friends will be celebrating Chris's life on Saturday, August 26, 2023 at 1:00pm the American Legion Post 49, 11005 Central Ave NE, Albuquerque, NM 87123.
