Fr. Nicholas Nirschl, O.Praem., 88, a Norbertine priest for nearly sixty years, died peacefully on Sunday, January 17, 2016. A native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, he was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Louise and his siblings Joseph, Jr., Florence and Richard.  He is survived by his Norbertine Community, Maureen Nirschl, many nieces and nephews and their families. Fr. Nick entered the Norbertine Order on August 28, 1951, and was ordained to the priesthood on August 31, 1956. He held a B.S. degree in Mathematics from St. Norbert College as well as M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin in Madison.  He served on the faculties of both St. Norbert High School and St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin. While on sabbatical in the mid-1970’s at New Mexico State University, Fr. Nick developed a love for the Hispanic culture.  Subsequently, for seventeen years Fr. Nick worked with the Padres Norbertinos in San Juan de Lurigancho, a marginalized district east of Lima, Peru.  Among other responsibilities, he helped establish a new parish and a number of mission stations for tens of thousands of people arriving every year from the mountains and jungles escaping the poverty and terrorism there. In June 1995, Fr. Nick returned to the United States and was welcomed to membership in the Norbertine Abbey of Santa Maria de la Vid in Albuquerque.  He served as pastor of the Native American parish of St. Augustine at Isleta Pueblo for the next seven years.  In his retirement, he assisted at numerous parishes in the Archdiocese of Santa Fe and then became a spiritual director and confessor to many who came to the Abbey.  Vespers of the Dead and a Vigil will be celebrated at 7:00 p.m.  Friday, January 22, 2016 at Santa Maria de la Vid Abbey, 5825 Coors Blvd, SW. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, January 23, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at the Abbey Church with Abbot Joel Garner, O.Praem. presiding.  Burial will follow immediately in the Norbertine Abbey Cemetery.  Memorial gifts can be contributed to the Norbertine Seminary Education Fund.
