  Gilbert S. Sánchez, after a remarkable 90 plus years of life, passed away at home, Sunday, April  12, 2015.   Gilbert (“Papa”) was a loving and loved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, son and brother.   Gilbert was the first Hispanic Certified Public Accountant in the State of New Mexico.  He lived an amazing and diverse life.  He was born on June 18, 1924, in Pueblitos, NM, south of Belen, and began life working on a small farm, where he learned to love the land.  From that humble beginning he went on to graduate from Belen High School and  became a carpenter.   Gilbert then joined the Army during World War II,  Cannon Company-132 Infantry, where he fought in the Pacific, including campaigns in the Philippines and the Solomon Islands.  After he was honorably discharged from the Army, he attended Southwestern College in Los Angeles where he obtained his Bachelors Degree with a concentration in accounting. Gilbert returned to New Mexico, where he married Ruth Aragón, and began work with a predecessor to KPMG.  Gilbert attended the University of New Mexico, where he graduated with a Masters in Business Administration.  He maintained a public accounting practice in Albuquerque for more than 50 years and continued to serve his clients until his death.  Gilbert was a fantastic hunter and outdoorsman.  He loved skiing, which he took up with his grandchildren at the age of 60.  Perhaps more than anything, he loved working on his farms and his garden. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Ruth A. Sánchez; his mother, Adela S. Sánchez; his father, José Sánchez; and sIx brothers and sisters.  Gilbert is survived by his children, Irene Gerstle and husband, Walter, Gilbert L. Sánchez, Phillip Sánchez and wife, Mari, Cathy Gorman and husband, Robert, Sylvia Kloberdanz and husband, Dennis; sisters, Eva Moya, and Emily Bobinski; grandchildren, Frank Sánchez and wife, K'Ann, Sarah Gorman, Lillian Gorman, Angela Sánchez, Stephen Sánchez, Michael Sánchez, Stephanie Gorman, Tanya Kloberdanz, Valerie Hauser and husband, Andrew, David Gerstle, and Marissa Sánchez; great-grandchildren, Tyler Sánchez, Renae Sánchez, Alexandra Sánchez, and Kaylee Sánchez; brother in law, Frank Aragón; sister in law, Mary Jane Sánchez; devoted longtime friend, Tom Hess; countless friends, clients, and other relatives. Gilbert was a devout parishioner of St. Anne’s Catholic Church.  Visitation will be Thursday, April 16, 2015 from 6:15 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at St. Anne’s Catholic Church, 1400 Arenal Rd. SW, with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m.  Final visitation will be Friday, April 17, 2015 from 8:30 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. at St. Anne’s Catholic Church.  Entombment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.  Pallbearers will be Sarah Gorman, Lillian Gorman, Angela Sánchez, Stephanie Gorman, Tanya Kloberdanz, Valerie Hauser, and Marissa Sánchez.
