Inez Barela went home to be with the Lord on May 9,2023 with her loving family at her side. She was born on September 8, 1931, to Juan and Cirilia Madrid in San Luis, Colorado. She is survived by her two daughters, Kathleen Elwell and husband, David, and Evaleen Griego: grandchildren, David Elwell, Desiree Pengally and husband, Israel, and Joleen Griego; her precious great-grandchildren, Madison and Ryder Elwell and Zayvian Pengally; one sister, Wilma Lovato and several loving nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of seventy years, Felix E. Barela; three siblings, Julio Madrid, Lee Madrid, and Gloria Belmontez. Inez retired after twenty-five years from the City of Albuquerque, Municipal Development Department in 1980, along with her husband, Felix who also retired from the City of Albuquerque. She had been very active for twenty plus years with the American Business Women’s Association. They enjoyed and loved to travel, go camping, fishing, and visiting with family and friends. She was a very loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, friend and devout catholic. Inez will be truly missed. A very special thank you to Father Hickman who has been by her side and the rest of the family for many years. Thank you to her caregivers, Karen Ansera and all the staff at Life Spire Assisted Living, the Hospice nurse and Chaplain. Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 18, 2023, at 9:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church located at 1860 Griegos Rd. NW with a Rosary to be recited at 10:00 a.m. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated by Father Stephen Hickman at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow the services at Sunset Memorial Cemetery 924 Menaul Blvd NE where she will be laid to rest next to her husband Felix.
