Joey G. Montaño, age 67, an Albuquerque, New Mexico resident, passed away on November 8, 2022. Joey is survived by his wife of 43 years, Rita Martinez Montaño; son Joseph A. Montaño, wife Stacey, and granddaughters, Bryn and McKynzie; daughter Jessica L. Montaño and husband Eric Davis; siblings: Dorothy Montaño, Tommy Montaño and wife Carmen, Nancy Montaño, Donna Starustka, Charles Montaño, brother-in-law Dave Gendron, sister-in-law Roberta Martinez, sister-in-law Ramona Martinez and husband John Marx. Preceded in death by his father Louis Montaño, mother Onice Montaño, father-in-law Flavio G. Martinez, mother-in-law Lupita V. Martinez, brother Louie Montaño, sister Michelle Gendron and brother-in-law Flavio Martinez III.
Joey was a West Mesa High School teacher, coach, athletic director, Albuquerque Public Schools athletic administrator, founder of the APS Foundation, member of the NM Sports Hall of Fame, NMASBO executive director, and CoopCamp director.
Services for Joey will be on Monday, November 28, 2022, at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 5415 Fortuna Rd NW, Albuquerque, NM 87105, and private interment will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, 1900 Edith Blvd. NE at a later time. Visitation is at 10:00 am, and the mass will start at 11:00 am, with a reception in Rosario Hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to make donations to the New Mexico Activities Association Foundation for a memorial scholarship in honor of Joey Montaño.
