José Maria Perea III, age 45, lifelong resident of Albuquerque, passed away Thursday, January 2, 2019. José is survived by his parents, Pablo and Kathleen Perea; sister, Antoinette Valenzuela and husband, Marc; nieces and nephew, Madalynn, Marcos and Mercedes as well as several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Emilio and Stella P. Garcia and Jose Maria and Carlota Perea.
José has been an inspiration for many people. At a young age of 14, he became paralyzed. That did not stop him from continuing to be adventurous, loving, a family-man and spiritual. Nothing was an obstacle. He managed to find a way to accomplish his goals such as being a proud graduate of Rio Grande High School, earning a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree at UNM in English and Spanish and got accepted into Law School and attended for 2 years. He used what he learned to embrace his native New Mexican roots in the Land Grants, New Mexico Acecia, raising Santa Gertrudis, and cutting wood. He did it all with such grace.
His spiritual journey led him to become a Hermano de la Faternidad Piadosa de Nuestro Padre Jesus de Nazareno de Atrisco. Los “alabados” y “oraciones” he sent up to the Heavens gave him and his family strength. He carried his cross with such ease and never made his journey to eternal life look difficult. “Vaya con Dios mi hijo, vaya con Dios mi amor.”
