In Loving Memory of Rudolph S. Ortega, Sr.

To all who knew him, Rudy (Rudolph S. Ortega, Sr.) was a larger-than-life presence. His ability to make friends was unmatched—whether in his early military days, at the local grocery store, or at the casino, his favorite pastime in later years. Wherever he went, he left a lasting impression, always running into someone he knew, and always willing to lend a hand or share a kind word.

Rudy’s journey was one of strength, resilience, and determination. Orphaned at an early age, he stepped into the role of protector and caregiver for his younger sister, seeking support from a relative to help him navigate this early responsibility. At just sixteen, Rudy enlisted in the Army, where he found the discipline and structure that would shape the rest of his life. Rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant and joining the Special Forces, Rudy served with honor during the Korean Conflict and was awarded multiple medals of distinction. His service continued in the Air National Guard, where he was instrumental in founding the 82nd Airborne New Mexico Lobo Chapter. He also became a proud Mason, dedicated to helping others throughout his life.

In addition to his military service, Rudy was a man of many talents and professions. He worked as a barber, a dock worker at Yellow Freight, and a mail handler for the United States Postal Service. His diverse experiences were marked by a deep commitment to his work and a constant drive to improve and serve.

Rudy’s passion for discipline and mentorship extended beyond his professional life. He earned a 4th-degree black belt in Kempo Karate, serving as an instructor and sharing the art with many, he ran the Police Athletic League as well as training numerous boxers in the Golden Gloves Division. His dedication to teaching and shaping others extended far beyond the dojo or the ring—Rudy was always ready to offer guidance, love, and support to those in need.

A cornerstone of Rudy’s success and happiness was his loving wife, Loretta, whom he married at just sixteen. Together, they shared seventy-four years of steadfast devotion. Their journey took them from New Mexico to Germany, back to New Mexico, then to California, New Mexico again, Arizona, and ultimately, Albuquerque, where they made their home. Through every move and every challenge, Loretta’s unwavering support and love were the foundation of Rudy’s life. Together, they opened their home to countless relatives and friends, always welcoming others as part of their family. The Ortega home was a place of warmth, love, and acceptance, where everyone was embraced just as they were.

Rudy leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and loyalty. He is survived by his beloved wife, Loretta Sanchez Ortega, and their five sons: Rudy Ortega Jr. and wife Lorraine, Randy Ortega and girlfriend Lorraine Gonzales, Louie Sanchez and wife Cassie, Ryan Ortega and wife Danette, and Rembrant Ortega. Rudy is also survived by fifteen grandchildren, twenty-four great-grandchildren, sister Tommie Di Bari, a cherished niece, Georgia Jaramillo and her husband Jim, and especially loving niece and nephew, Tito and Frances Taylor.

Rudy’s life was a testament to resilience, love, and a spirit that never wavered. His family and friends will sorely miss him, but his memory will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
