Josie Savage

d. June 30, 2022

Josie Brown Savage, born in Albuquerque, NM on March 28, 1931, passed peacefully surrounded by family on June 30, 2022, to be with her heavenly Father and savior Jesus Christ. Josie is survived by her three children Clorinda “Lori” Salim, David Savage, and Robert Savage (Myrna); grandchildren Nasser Salim (Deszarae), Leila Salim, Valerie Salim-Meza (Jamie), Brenda, Robert, and David Savage; great-grandchildren Dante and Jazmin Salim, and James and Nadia Meza. She was preceded in death by her husband David Savage, parents Roberto and Cora Brown, siblings Emma, Louisa, Gertrude, Bob, Eddie, Leroy, Johnny, and son-in-law Khalid Salim.

Josie attended Harwood Girls School in Albuquerque and got her BA in Education at National College in Kansas City, MO, where she met her husband Dave, raised her family, taught in public schools, and served in countless roles in church and community. After moving back to Abq in 1974, she taught in APS, mostly at Armijo Elementary, served as president of NEA Albuquerque, and was inducted into the NM NEA Hall of Fame for her tireless work for students and teachers. She retired from APS after 35 years teaching, but never stopped serving her community, organizing food for the needy, in political activism, teaching Bible study, and looking after her grandchildren.

We will all dearly miss our mom and nana. She was a model of a godly woman, mother, wife, grandmother, teacher, and friend. God gifted her with the unique abilities to teach with patience, serve with grace, love unconditionally, and give with boundless generosity. We thank you for your prayers during this time of immeasurable loss.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 9th at 10am at El Buen Samaritano UMC. Due to the continued and serious risks of the COVID-19 pandemic, the family requests all attendees be vaccinated and wear masks while indoors. There will be no formal reception.

March of Dimes is a charity that was very important to Josie and is the reason some of us are here. We are blessed to have all we need, so in lieu of flowers or gifts, you can honor Josie's memory with a donation to this great organization. https://www.marchofdimes.org/giving/support-in-honor-in-memory.aspx
